Introduction
A combination of powerful but inexpensive personal computers, the availability of financial information on the Internet, and online discount brokers has made it very attractive for individuals to do their own analysis and investing. Using the computer and the Internet, individuals may buy, sell, and transfer between many mutual funds and buy or sell stocks, bonds, etc. on line, through a large number of brokers or funds companies. As a result, there are now a large number of tools to help individual investors make better decisions concerning their investments. These include Internet sites as well as individual programs that can be purchased. Software programs range from those that provide basic financial advice, to portfolio management, to those that provide detailed information and aides for doing analysis of individual securities. There are two main approaches for the analysis of securities: Fundamental Analysis and Technical Analysis. Those who use fundamental analysis strive to determine the present and future value of a company based on its earnings, balance sheet, growth, etc. compared it to its value, as reflected in the current price of the security. The technical analyst uses the price and volume history of the security, as viewed on a chart, to help them determine what will happen to the price of the security in the future. The purpose of either method is to determine what is the appropriate price and time to purchase or sell a security. MetaStock is a comprehensive technical analysis program. Using MetaStock The software allows the user to establish folders to follow multiple portfolios of stocks, bonds mutual funds, etc. It is easy to call up the data for single or multiple securities and view the charts. Figure 1 shows the daily price chart for Cisco on top with the corresponding volume below. The program provides a great deal of flexibility for customising the charts (color, line width, display type, etc.) and a variety of tools for aiding the analyst in interpreting the data. A very handy feature is the ability of the program to use the Microsoft IntelliMouse and keyboard to quickly scroll, scan, zoom, and alter the date scaling for a chart. Charts may be easily printed with options similar to those for any windows program. Features to Aid Technical Analysis With MetaStock you have nine styles choices for plotting price data. These are the common high/low/open/close bars, candlestiks, candle volume, equivolume, kagi, point and figure, renko, three-line break, and a simple line chart. MetaStock also provides over 100 indicators, that may be easily accessed from a pop-down quick list to use as technical analysis tools. These mathematical constructs, from the basic price and volume data, may be dragged onto the price chart or shown in separate windows above or below the price chart as shown in Figure 2. The 50-day moving average (solid line) and 200-day moving average (dashed line) of the sotck price is shown in the top window superimposed on its price plot. The middle window depicts a plot of the popular moving average convergence/divergence (MACD) while the lower window is a bar graph of the daily volume. In addition to indicators, the software provides over 20 functions for line studies to aid in the interpretation of price or indicator graphs. These plots may be used in any of the multiple windows and may be easily accessed using the mouse to select the study from the drawing toolbar and then begin drawing on the desired chart. On the top of Figure 3, a trend line (solid) is shown for the price of Cisco Systems on the first half of the chart and standard error channels (chain) for the price on the remainder of the chart. Symbols and text may easily be added to the chart using the text portion of the Studies toolbar. An example of a hypothetical purchase note is included in the top window. The software also provides "expert help" for many of its indicators. This can consist of visual aides as shown in the lower window of Figure 3 for the MACD indicator and also a commentary that may be accessed by clicking the mouse on the visual aide. The multiple window feature may be used to view several securities at once to compare their performance, or to look at several indicators, for an individual security, to see if they are providing confirming or diverging signals. If you have, for example, a collection of communication stocks that you wish to refer to often, you can save them in layout (a single file that when opened displays all of the charts each time). Similarly, if you have selected a set of indicators that you want to apply for either a single chart or a layout, you can save the set as a template and easily apply them to other securities. MetaStock allows the user to design and create custom indicators and trading systems. Once a model is created it can be tested against back data, using the software's System Tester, and the results compared with other trading models. The software also allows the user to develop or use built in criteria to screen for securities in the folders that match the criteria. Once the "exploration" is completed, the results may be viewed or printed as a report. This can help the investor select securities for further analysis or action. Summary MetaStock is an excellent technical analysis program that is easy to learn and use. The object-oriented design provides for convenient drag-and-drop functioning and easy integration with Microsoft programs and the Internet. The software provides information and help so that a new user can quickly use many of its capabilities and features but also provides the depth, structure, and tools so that an investor can continue to enhance his or her technical skills. It is particularly suited to the serious investor who wants to use technical analysis as an important tool in managing his or her investments.
